Media Statement - 2nd April 2009

Karl Bitar, National Secretary of the ALP today welcomed the new ALP National Presidential team, which was elected unopposed after the close of nominations on Friday.

"The ALP has elected a strong team of representatives who will be excellent spokespeople for the party at a national level."

The 3 candidates elected were:

  • Premier Anna Bligh
  • Mr Michael Williamson
  • Ms Jenny McAllister

"All the candidates have a proven record of achievement in the ALP and in the community."

"I particularly welcome the election of Premier Bligh, who has made history as the first female Premier to be elected in Australia and who continues to provide the strong leadership Queensland needs in these tough economic times."

"I look forward to working with Michael Williamson and Jenny McAllister on making the ALP more responsive to members and more active in local communities."

"The National Presidential team will be an important part of Labor's campaign to reelect a Rudd Labor Government at the next election." Mr Bitar concluded.

Under the ALP National Constitution, the role of National President rotates on a yearly basis between the candidates.

The National Presidential team will commence their term at the start of the ALP National Conference, which will be held in Sydney 30 July 2009 to 1 August 2009.
